At Winona, patient safety comes first.

“Do no harm” has been one of the guiding principles of medicine for millennia, and Winona takes this seriously. Certain contraindications preclude some individuals from being good candidates for HRT. During the onboarding process, you will be screened to determine if HRT is a safe option for you.

Some common contraindications to HRT include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding

  • History of DVT, pulmonary embolism, or a clotting disorder

  • Cancer of the uterus, ovaries, or cervix

  • Personal history of breast cancer

  • Atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH)

  • History of heart attack or heart disease

  • History of transient ischemic attack (TIA)

  • History of stroke

  • Active liver disease

  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure

  • Unexplained abnormal vaginal bleeding

  • Being below age 35 or age 60 and above

Additional conditions may also pose risks, which is why it's important to fill out the health questionnaire accurately and provide a detailed medical history. Your Winona physician will carefully review your information to ensure any prescriptions are safe for your unique needs.
