At Winona, patient safety comes first.
“Do no harm” has been one of the guiding principles of medicine for millennia, and Winona takes this seriously. Certain contraindications preclude some individuals from being good candidates for HRT. During the onboarding process, you will be screened to determine if HRT is a safe option for you.
Some common contraindications to HRT include, but are not limited to, the following:
Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
History of DVT, pulmonary embolism, blood clot, or a clotting disorder
Diagnosis of MTHFR, BRCA, RAD, or CHEK2 gene mutation
Cancer of the female reproductive system (uterus, ovaries, or cervix)
Personal history of breast cancer
Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia (ADH)
History of heart attack or heart disease
Uncontrolled high blood pressure
History of transient ischemic attack (TIA)
History of stroke
Active liver disease
Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
Surgical removal of the uterus and/or ovaries more than 10 years ago without previous HRT treatment
Being below age 35 or age 60 and above
Additional conditions may also pose risks, which is why it's important to fill out the health questionnaire accurately and provide a detailed medical history. Your Winona physician will carefully review your information to ensure any prescriptions are safe for your unique needs.
