Fortunately, most women don't experience any side effects from HRT. For those who do, they usually occur only in the first few weeks of treatment as the body adjusts to the increased hormone levels.

These are some things that may occur:

  • Breast tenderness

  • Spotting or an abnormal period in the first month

  • Headaches

  • Nausea, especially with the oral formulations

  • Drowsiness or sleepiness, which is usually a welcomed side effect for those with insomnia.

  • Bloating or water retention, which may cause a temporary increase in weight

  • DHEA can also cause acne or anxiety in some women.

If side effects become an interruption or last longer than the first few months of treatment, please reach out to your Winona doctor for assistance, as your health and well-being are very important to us.
