What is pellet therapy?
Pellet therapy is a form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that involves surgically inserting hormone pellets under the skin. Pellets last around 3-5 months, and the procedure must be repeated for as long as therapy is desired. Note: Winona does not prescribe pellet therapy.
Benefits of pellet therapy:
Sustained, consistent release of hormones over time
Can use bioidentical hormones
Can combine multiple hormones in one pellet
Drawbacks of pellet therapy:
Invasive surgical procedure with risks of bruising, bleeding, or infection
Requires in-person doctor visits every 3-5 months
Irreversible once inserted
Limited ability to adjust doses or correct unwanted side effects
Less preferred for those with sensitive skin
What are HRT patches, creams, and pills?
HRT is also available in other forms, including patches, creams, and pills. Winona prescribes each of these methods in personalized doses.
Patches: Applied to the skin and changed 1-2 times per week
Pills: Taken orally, usually daily
Creams: Applied to the skin, typically daily
Benefits of patches, pills, and creams:
Sustained, consistent release of hormones over time
Can use bioidentical hormones
Creams: Can combine multiple hormones in one cream
Non-invasive application, no surgical risks
Easy to personalize, reverse, or adjust doses
No in-person visits required
Simple, familiar application methods
Drawbacks of patches, pills and creams:
Require more frequent dosing
Patches and creams: less preferred for those with sensitive skin
Pills: less preferred for those with liver conditions
Why does Winona prescribe patches, creams, and pills, but not pellets?
Winona focuses on personalized, convenient care. Our prescribing philosophy is to improve symptoms with minimal risks and discomfort. For these reasons, Winona prescribes patches, creams, or pills. These treatments can be applied from the comfort of home, have more customization and adjustment options, and best prevent unwanted effects or discomfort.
