When women are in perimenopause — the phase leading up to menopause — their periods can change dramatically. Some may experience heavier bleeding, while others have lighter bleeding; in some months, both can occur.

Cycles may also become shorter or longer or vary from month to month. This irregularity is common in the time leading up to the complete cessation of periods.
