Herpes is a sexually transmitted infection, or STI, that causes painful blistering on the genitals. There is no cure for it, but it can be successfully managed with antiviral medications.

The decline in estrogen levels that a woman experiences during the menopause transition can trigger an outbreak of herpes, but starting HRT will not increase the chances of having one.
