In general, there is no definitive length of time to use HRT, although, at Winona, patients must be under 60 years of age to start treatment.

The answer to this question depends on each patient and their Winona doctor's recommendations. Some women may be able to use HRT for a short period of time to relieve symptoms, while some women may need long-term HRT for continued symptom relief and quality of life.

The prescribed dose and duration of HRT use should be determined on an individual basis, after discussing the risks and benefits with your Winona doctor. No arbitrary limit should be set on duration of use.

It's safe to be on HRT for as long as needed to treat symptoms, but it can be safely stopped at any time. Winona generally suggests pausing medication after 2-3 years to see how you feel. If you feel fine without the treatment, it's a good time to stop. If the symptoms return, you can resume medication. You can continue to do trial pauses every year or so.

Most women feel better on HRT, so they safely stay on the medication for several years, or as long as symptoms are a concern.
